- 2005-11 Shopping for
another digital camera. Here's my homework.
Got the Sony DSC-T7. It's pleasantly compact -- amazingly compact, in
fact -- but it overexposes pictures with the flash. It's still in its
probationary period...
- 2004-10-03 Buying
digital camera. (My first one, a beloved little Fuji A203 (2 Mp, 3x)
succumbed to the heat of my glove compartment and shattered its LCD.)
Here is my detailed research and shopping tips (second tab at bottom
of spreadsheet). Useful stuff if you're interested in buying a digital
camera. I was tempted by the Pentax Optio 450, which was officially
discontinued day before yesterday, but am opting for the brand new Fuji
E550, which boasts very fast response time (1.2 sec startup time and
shutter lag 0.05sec. It also has smart zoom, meaning at lower resolution
modes, the digital zoom automatically makes use of the higher resolution
available. If I were buying a month later, I would have gone with the
Pentax Optio SV.
P.S. 1/29/05: I've had the Fuji E550 camera for several months and
love it. For my purposes, its only
drawback is that, although it is amazingly compact for its features, I
wish it were a little smaller so it would fit more easily into a pocket.
The camera experienced one mishap: To download your pictures to
computer you plug the camera into an ISB socket, creating a virtual volume in
your file system, and copy the files there to a real hard drive. This
works well. It occurred to me to move the files rather than copy
them, saving me the trouble of deleting the files from the camera afterwards.
This also worked. Then I had the bright idea of uploading a
picture (.jpg) from my computer to the camera to show someone later in the
evening. This worked, but the display developed vertical white stripes.
Fuji made the whole process of repairing the camera very easy. The
turnaround time was quick too (2 1/2 weeks.)
